Synchro ERP Ltd - the leading global provider of specific software systems to the metal casting industry celebrates its 40th anniversary.
Barbara Nolan Collins, who has helped build the company into the successful business it is today, looks back at the history of the company.
The story began in Birmingham University in 1974 when university lecturer Trevor Law and his student designed a simple software production control programme. Foundries introduced to the software saw the value, uptake wasgreater than initial expectation had predicated and with significant government grants available this was a marriage of opportunity.
In 1975 Dewtec Systems Ltd was founded. The companygrew quickly taking the opportunity to be ‘the first’providing a production control system specific to foundries.
The company, based in the West Midlands, grew moving tolarger premises on a semi regular basis to accommodate expansion.
The software grew from the initial basic production control function, expanding to a trend in newer language design focusing on programming for larger scale systems through the use of modules. This then dictated the obvious business model - every customer could purchase separate modules according to their requirements and expand when the necessity arose. With the optional software support contract being approximately 18 per cent of the total modules purchased; companies took the contract thus providing a reliable cash flow stream.
In the first 18/20 years several software rewrites ensued, MRP and MRP II (material requirement planning) were developed specifically for the casting industry. The company expanded into the United States and business was booming. The challenges of the growing business inevitably meant some important aspects were either being ignored or some team members were not doing the best job with a view to the future survival of the business. The software industry was changing fast…
WHEN NO ONE WAS LISTENING
Chris Collins the R&D programmer at Dewtec had serious concerns, and felt looming issues were not being addressed such as the impending year 2000 and the impact of Windows on the future of the industry. In 1994 he left Dewtec to develop a Windows version. Dewtec prioritised its resources into a year 2000
re-write, however the software was written as a DOS application, an excellent language but Collins felt it was not going to be the ‘future’ for any software developer.
He spent months working night and day developing a foundry-based Windows system, with little resource he achieved this and within 18 months the system was ready to use.
AN HONEST APPROACH
The traditional business model of selling each module did not appeal to Collins who favoured a different approach. The new system would be leased with no upfront cost per module and no separate support contract but a simple all inclusive model - with all modules, support and upgrades attached to a cost per license. This approach would open up the system to smaller foundries, which were unable to fund, or were reluctant to spend large upfront fees on MRP/ ERP software systems. This business model lends itself to long-term relationships, longevity and commitment, there could be no ‘here today and could not care less about tomorrow’ attitude.
“Chris and I created a company with strong moral values: every customer would pay the same published pricing; customer care would be outstanding; unlike typical customer experience, communication would be a priority; there would be no company loans; a development stream would be maintained and we would explore new languages and emerging technologies,” said Barbara Nolan Collins. “The Synchro team would want to remain loyal because they felt valued.”
In March 2006 Dewtec Systems Ltd went into liquidation and Synchro ERP Ltd purchased the company.
BUSINESS IS HEALTHY, ROBUST AND DRIVEN WITH PASSION
Barbara is clear about why the company has succeeded: “Synchro is selective about the business we take on, not all business is good business after all we are in the business of satisfying customers,” she said. “Synchro ERP Ltd is currently the global market leader with offices in the UK, USA, Germany, Spain, South Africa and Brazil; with agents in India and China. We have an amazing team behind our success, with a global implementation team and full support in a variety of languages the company grows from strength to strength.” Chris Collins enthuses: “We are not born knowing how to grow and succeed in business, every day brings new challenges. Both my wife and I are still in love with this journey. We are immensely proud of this 40th anniversary - well done Team Synchro.”

Foundry Congress, Queretaro Mexico
Synchro ERP, the global leading provider of metalcasting specific software, was extremely pleased to attend the Foundry Congress in Queretaro Mexico.
The city is great, and the hotel provides a much better view of everything you can find in this lovely place.
It was easy to find everything during the show, all exhibitors were close to each other and 100% ready to answer all questions.
Talking about questions, It seems that the Mexican’s know exactly what they want, I don`t remember being asked "what does your software do?", basically everyone that came asked questions like "How can your software help on Tooling control?" or "Is it possible to cost the entire production of my cast?"
Synchro of course can provide all the answers and some others for questions you don`t even know will have in the near future.
It was a pleasure to be there and I am looking forward to the next year…

AFS Texas Chapter - April 2015
The Texas chapter of the American Foundry society held the annual Leonard P. Rigamonti Memorial Scholarship fundraising golf tournament on Friday April 10th 2015 at the posh Corsicana Country Club.
A huge amount of money was raised this year, which is a testament as to how education is viewed as an investment in the future by the chapter. The golf was great, although unseasonably cool for an April morning in Texas. The comradery and the "purpose” behind the golf is far more important than the team golf scores at the end. There is nothing like being with metalcasters and enjoying a day on the links. Synchro ERP was a proud Silver sponsor of this important event as we recognize the importance of educating up-and-coming metalcasters for today and tomorrow.
The team that I was on was very unique and I was pleased to meet up with two individuals that I had not met before. What was striking about this is that we all had a passion for 60's, 70's and 80's rock and roll music. One of the players had a music box with him and we enjoyed the many great tunes. The other player shared his story of growing up in Pittsburgh PA where his uncle was a concert promoter. This metalcaster shared stories of seeing the Doors, Pink Floyd, Jefferson Airplane, Led Zeppelin, Chicago, and many others. We played a game of thinking of bands to see if he had seen them, and for the most part, he had seen them all.
The golf tournament was followed by a scrumptious dinner of surf and turf and a program by the FEF and others. A note to "winners" of the golf tournament, "you must be present at the dinner to collect your prizes!" This years winning team learned this the hard way as no members were present to collect the trophies and prizes, so the prize money was donated to the scholarship fund! All in good fun of course, because this is the REASON for the golf outing.

The Diecasting Society AGM April 2015
As new company members of the society it was a privilege to attend this year’s AGM held at The Bugatti Trust Prescott Hill which is also the home of the Bugatti Owners’ Club and location of the speed hill climb.
I was greeted with a warm welcome from Hugh Conway (Chairman and trustee of the Bugatti Trust) who then followed with an excellent presentation on the life and works of the Bugatti family.
After the presentation we were able to view the collection of photographs, drawings, letters and articles that were donated by the founder of the trust; the late Hugh Conway (Senior) along with many more artefacts to include engines, component parts of engines, a type 35A car and baby Bugatti!
There was a good attendance for the Diecasting society AGM, GIFA, apprenticeships and updating the society’s website were discussed as well as Mr Simon Hanson of HCM Engineering, handing over the presidency of The Diecasting Society to John Paterson of Striko UK, after 8 years of service!
More Info on the Diecasting society can be found at http://www.dcsoc.org.uk/

CMDT - September 2014 article
Pushing forward with App Technology
Having developed foundry-specific software since 1975, Synchro ERP has recently announced App technology, for use by cast metal manufacturers.
Ongoing development has always been a
major strength at Synchro; keeping pace
with technology is a crucial element to the
company’s global success. Recently, several
Apps SF have been released for the shop
floor, a development stream considered
important for the mobile requirements for the
cast metal manufacturing environment.
Synchro already has an outstanding shop
floor data collection module integrated in the
software but the shop floor is a challenging
environment. Consequently, the company’s
vigilance for technical innovation and
suitable solutions led to the development of
shop floor Apps. Cost-effective and flexible
devices lend themselves to work in what
can be a harsh environment and the App
interface, familiar to most people, is utilised
in their everyday lives.
Cost savings are a continual challenge
for all companies and Synchro makes this
a prerequisite when
developing software, in
this case introducing
versatile technology
solutions, eliminating
expensive networking
costs, fewer fixed work
stations and lower cost
hardware replacement.
Intuitive software
development is a
strength for which
Synchro is renowned,
the benefits including
less training. In some
instances, the company
predicts no training
for its shop floor App,
which is available
on Android, iOS and
Windows. Current
functionality includes
Work/Scarp Booking,
Time Collection, WIP
Counter, Sub-Con and Purchase Receipts,
as well as Materials Stock Taking. More
development is in progress for the shop floor

AFS Texas Planning Meeting - Review and Pictures
Shane Allen, Head of Synchro ERP North American Operations, had the pleasure of representing the global team at the recent AFS, American Foundry Society, Texas Chapter board planning meeting. The event was held in Corsicana Texas which is about sixty miles south of the Dallas/Fort Worth area. Eric Meyers, President of Oil City Iron Works and chapter chairman, hosted the event at the Corsicana Country Club and a fine fare was provided.
This was the 2014-2015 planning meeting and the upcoming events were covered in-depth as well as the financials and budget of the chapter. A lot of quality time and energy has been expended by the membership in getting the upcoming15th AFS Texas Regional organized. The dates of the event are September 24th - 26th at the Hilton in Arlington Texas. For complete details and registration information, please visit http://www.afs-tx.org
Sponsors are still needed to help defray the costs of the event and to get their name out in front of the attendees.
This will be an "All Star" event with the heavy hitters of Chris Norch, AFS National President from President of Denison Industries Texas and Leo Baran, AFS National Director of Membership Services speaking at the event.
Please contact Dan Smith, Vice Chairman of the AFS Texas Chapter, at 903-759-3946 or by email at dsmith@swscc.com regarding sponsorship packages.

There are additional sponsorship opportunities for the upcoming AFS Texas Sam Houston Race Track meeting held in January 2015 . A sponsor is needed for providing the box lunch for the Texas Trouble Shooters Meeting. This is a popular class that focuses on solving problems within the foundry. The preliminary topic for this year's meeting will be to cover solidification modelling, gating, and risers.
Dr. Laura Bartlett, Professor at Texas State University, provided an update on the success of the foundry program and how AFS Texas is really supporting their needs. They have students lined up for the foundry course and also students participating in internships.
Until next time, see you on down the road at the 15th AFS Texas Regional.

FWUK 2014 - Review and Pictures
Another great day at FWUK 2014. It was an early start for this year's Foundry Workshop UK, the annual one day table top event was held @ Derby's IPRO stadium, home of The Rams.
Cast Metal & Diecasting Times (organizers of the event) booked The Toyota suite for the exhibitors, papers were divided in two rooms the Pedigree and Avensis suite. This allowed the delegates to choose which paper they would attend and provided a steady flow of traffic through the main room. Ten papers were given in total. We arrived at 7.30am to setup and were served tea, coffee and biscuits, Steve Hill president of FESA (supporters of the event) opened with a welcome speech followed shortly after by Professor Peter Cooke's paper on" The evolving UK and European Automotive Industries "he took time to visit and chat with Synchro after giving his paper; he took some of our literature and a USB stick! By lunch time (which I might add was fabulous!) all of the attendees had arrived and the day began to buzz.
We had time to chat to some of our customers, Kia Siavashi from Finecast who had travelled from West Sussex! Craig Grant of Lucy Castings, Mike Stanley of Shakespeare Foundry and Patrick Herron of Darwins all took time to stop by to say hello, thanks guys, it was nice to see you! The stalwart exhibitors attended, Omega, Inductotherm, Asmet, Eurotek Systems just a few to name. It was lovely to meet up again with the guys at Foundry Trade Journal and Cast Metal Diecasting Times (Synchro ERP regularly advertise with) and finally to meet Colin Robinson who worked hard to make this event happen. On behalf of Synchro thank you Colin.
Lynn Postle, editor of Foundry Trade Journal of course attended and kindly posed for a picture. Laurie Palmer of Arun Technology and Former president of FESA also attended as an exhibitor and a speaker, it was good to see him again. Other new people we met were Richard Chandler and Richard Phillips of Novacast Ltd; spent a fair amount of time discussing with Simon Adlington – Global Implementation Manager for Synchro the benefits of an extensive all inclusive Foundry Specific System(photo above). The group from Mil- Ver Metal Company Ltd also visited our table top and had a long old discussion with Simon Adlington giving me another opportunity for a quick picture, thank you!
In my opinion this one day event will grow and grow; this is the 4th year, developing into an important date in the foundry calendar. Synchro ERP are proud to support and attend.
Thank you to all who make this happen – See you all next year.
Bianca Catherall

The MMI 2014 was held at its familiar venue at the Exhibition centre in Beijing.
This show organised by the Chinese Foundry Association is a well-known and trusted event in China and as such attracts many businesses from the Oceanic region if not the world.
It therefore provided the perfect Launchpad to the official start of the association between Synchro ERP and Sage Software (Shanghai) China and was the opportunity to meet and greet old as well as new potential customers.
We thank everyone for coming to see us and their loyal support and we look forward to seeing you all again soon.

118th Metalcasting Congress - 8th-11th April 2014
Synchro ERP, the global leading provider of metalcasting specific software, is extremely pleased to report to you that the North American economic recovery is in full swing and pressing ahead at full steam.
At the AFS Metalcasting Congress, virtually every metalcaster that we spoke with reported that things are really looking up, orders are on the books, and some are even at or beyond capacity. Shane Allen, Head of North American Operations, even spoke with one metalcaster that is in the midst of a multi-million dollar plant expansion with new automated molding lines, new core machines, new melt platforms, and a new sand system.
In speaking with Al Spada and Joe Murphy of Modern Casting, both reported that they are also hearing that the economic recovery has turned the corner and many metalcasters now have a backlog of work.
According to Chris Collins, CEO, one of the great things about shows such as this is that we get to meet up with so many of our loyal customers, introduce them to new features and development coming down the pipe, and also understand what they need to take full advantage of this economic recovery. Customers are the backbone of the company and we provide them with outstanding software and legendary support.
Simon Adlington had a proverbial blast in doing on-the-booth demonstrations and understanding the needs of the metalcaster and explaining how the software can exceed their needs. Simon has been doing this for thirty plus years and knows all facets of the metalcasting industry.
At the end of the day, the congress was a resounding success for the company with an extensive amount of new sales leads. Shane Allen has already conducted five online demonstrations this week and is expecting signed quotes to follow. We wish to thank everyone at the AFS and ModernCasting for making this all possible.
Of course, none of this would be possible without the core team members of Synchro ERP continuing the legacy of outstanding customer support and continuing on with implementations and training the world over.
Thank you everyone for visiting the Synchro ERP booth! We look forward to meeting up with the Investment Casters and the NFFS members in October.

Leonard P. Rigamonti Memorial Scholarship Fund Raiser
The Texas Chapter AFS will again be holding our Leonard P. Rigamonti Memorial Scholarship/Endowment Fund Raiser Golf Tournament on April 25th at the Corsicana Country Club
Last year our Scholarship/Fund Raiser Golf Tournament raised in excess of $14,800.00. This money was set aside and ear marked for use in the various educational assistance programs administered exclusively through the Texas Chapter. This year we are trying to better the amount of money raised and consequently do more and bigger things for more students throughout Texas and the Chapter boundaries.
Participation in this activity is not limited to members of the Texas Chapter AFS and their families. Give a thought to bringing a customer, work associate, a good friend, or your next door neighbour. Everyone is planning on having a good time and the more the merrier.

IFEX 2014
IFEX 2104 saw the participation of Synchro ERP with its agent and the moment the doors opened the activity on the booth never stopped with many potential customers from all over India enquiring about the software and its many benefits. It truly was a great opportunity to meet all kind of potential customers. Foundries in general in India are exporters with greater needs for good quality controls as well as modern technologies to help them understand their costs. Indeed many such customers are told by their customers that they need to obtain ERP software. Many foundries in India also have a very young manager team and these responsible people clearly understand the benefits of such software. So a lot of demonstrations were not about why ERP software but what about the Casting Specific Solution Synchro ERP can offer.
Overall not only was the software very well received and introduced but also everyone enjoyed the conference and found it a valuable source of information as ever. The guys in charge did a fine job organising this event so a big thanks to them.

AFS Texas Houston January 2014
Shane Allen attends the AFS Texas Board Meeting, dinner, and program.
Important items that came out of the board meeting, of which I am proud to represent the Synchro ERP team on, included:
- Expanding session at the March meeting which will include another Texas Trouble shooters meeting with actual hands-on foundry work, This will also be a board meeting as well
- Plans are underway for the Corsicana meeting and State Senator Brian Birdwell will be the speaker. This meeting will also be the major education fundraiser of the year with the golf tournament.
- September 24-26 will be a Texas Regional conference at the Hilton in Arlington. Details of this will be published after the Corsicana meeting
- Oil City Iron Works and Dennison Industries will be presented with an award at the upcoming Metal Casting Congress.
The dinner and program at the horse track were very good. Attendance was somewhat lighter than expected, but this was expected due to the inclement weather at hand. The program covered the Houston Texas Live Stock Show and Rodeo "formerly known as the "Fat Stock Show". Eric Meyers of Oil City Iron Works has been involved in this program for many years. The Show and Rodeo raise millions of dollars each year for educational scholarships and programs.
Everyone had a great time betting on the ponies...

AFS Texas Crosses the Red River and Invades Oklahoma Indian Territory in Search of Riches…
The AFS Texas Chapter made the journey to the Choctaw Indian Resort and Casino located in Durant Oklahoma. Shane Allen, head of North American Operations for Synchro ERP and a board member of the AFS Texas Chapter, made the trip across the Red River. There was a strong presence of Oklahoma foundries at the meeting, primarily the good foundrymen and women from East Jordan Iron Works located in Ardmore Oklahoma. The Red River is the "official" state boundary between Texas and Oklahoma.
A fine time was had by all in attendance and Shane and Eric Meyers of Oil City Iron Works, posted pictures to Facebook "live" during the meeting. The accommodations and food and beverage were outstanding, and I understand that a few folks came away from the casino as winner! Of course, everyone came away as a winner that attended the AFS meeting.

Integrated Scheduling Solutions
Chris Collins, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer at Synchro ERP, has designed and created software
solutions within the metal casting industry for the past 25 years, witnessing hundreds of companies and their often
innovative approaches to scheduling. He is aware of the pitfalls associated with the never ending balancing act that is
scheduling. Dependent on available resources, range of products and complexity of manufacturing, scheduling can be as
easy as 10 minutes' shuffling work instructions or days of painstaking analysis and prioritisation.

Epicore sued over alleged ERP project failure
Whaley is suing Epicor for fraud, breach of contract, unfair trade and negligent misrepresentation
SYNCHRO’s comments:
Lessons to be learned; the client (Whaley’s) and the provider (Epicore) undertook to do business together. Nothing much unusual there, expectations were set and business commenced however this did not go well; what appears to be an accumulation of failures on many levels.
1 - Cost:
Installation in the main business centre and 12 branches for an estimated US$190,000 ending in an over budget of $1 million. Epicore promised that costs would not exceed the estimate by more than 10%
SYNCHRO comments:
A set budget is a critical factor of the contract and agreement; this is certainly NOT how we undertake business.
2 - Scripted Demo’s:
The client was assured the software would meet all of its requirements
Initial apparent shortcomings in Epicore’s software.
SYNCHRO Comment:
A sale at any cost! perhaps. Oh boy, now that is fatal. We wonder who sold this to Whaley?
3 - Mix of software vendors:
Apparently Epicore used another company, Evron Computer Systems to provide developed software. Whaley had to pay Evron to try and correct the defects.
SYNCHRO Comment:
As experts in a niche market, we would never involve an outside vendor to develop or design software. No one knows our businesses like we do. The client’s relationship and contract is with us. Not unlike a marriage requires total commitment.
4 - Epicore staff turnover:
no continuity with the implementation project.
SYNCHRO Comment:
Continuity is critical for the first 18 months of the project and implementation.
At SYNCHRO we have NO staff turnover. Each is valued and a critical member of the team. Their skill and expertize is what make us the global success we are today.
SYNCHRO’s Conclusion
We know that biggest is not always best. There are some important aspects which are key to doing good business, providing excellent service, maintaining strong client relationship after all in the ERP software industry it cannot be compared to selling washing machines. Expertise is being purchased and trust is an ethical commitment and is as implicit as the signature on the contract.
The large generic ERP vendors cannot develop close relationships, for them it is a numbers game.
There are ERP providers specializing entirely in an industry sector; these companies have knowledge and skill available and their customer base thrive as a result.
As specialists in our industry (Cast Metal) we come across generic ERP & MRP which neither does the job nor fits 50% of the requirement. The software is too generalized; companies running these systems actually think this is the norm, all companies must have the same problems!
It is not the norm and finding a system developed and designed for your business / industry can make the difference between average or an extremely successful enterprise.
..................................................................
A stern warning for all company’s considering generic ERP
ERP: Custom Software Inhibits Business Agility
http://www.formtek.com/blog/?p=2134
SYNCHRO Comments:-
We have long understood this as a major issue which is little understood. Only after installation and the commitment of resource, expectation and many precious hours does a company then begin to realize the impact ‘A Generic ERP system’ has on the entire company. It is often described as a strait jacket. The flexibility, individual nuances which make companies and people unique in their jobs is no longer part of what it was. The software system is designed to streamline you down a path every step of the way.
We call it the McDonalds syndrome. Every one behaves in the same way, a mirror image of one another it is the way large ERP vendors sell 100,000 of systems. It is not feasible for them to develop and design the elements and learned values and characteristics which make ‘Joe Foundry Inc ‘ the success he is today.
SYNCHRO ERP work ceaselessly with clients. To start we have a software system specifically designed for the Cast Metal Industry. In 36 years we have implemented 1,000 of systems, each company with a passion and a desire for success.
SYNCHRO is not a one system fits all! And nor do we want it to be.

Companies should not use ERP in Cloud
Businesses should not move their enterprise resource planning (ERP) software to the cloud, it has been suggested.
Ian Anstey, head of SAP's Business ByDesign on-demand software range, told V3.co.uk that big companies should not put their ERP in the cloud because of the "risk and complexity".
He explained because of the risks involved, it is not worth large firms moving their "mission-critical applications into the cloud".
Mr Anstey said: "It is not proven to work, and it will be some time before they consider running an all-corporate cloud."
Moving ERP systems to the cloud could also have a major impact on the investments companies will have already made in their software, he added.
Independent consultancy firm Panorama Consulting Solutions recently said it would be conducting its annual ERP benchmark survey in a bid to discover more about the best ERP software packages used by companies, as well as their software-as-a-service ERP solutions.

*787 Dreamliner teaches Boeing costly lesson on outsourcing*
Response from Barbara Nolan
SYNCHRO ERP
'What goes around comes around'
When will we learn that cost is by no means the only factor to take into direct consideration. The financials continue to drive us beyond reasoning...the boeing 787 Dreamliner is such a stark example of what is wrong with chasing 'the most for less' I quote Boeings dream was to save money!
Reading the article it is quite frightening to think the repercussions were not thought through with what appears to be a real lack of planning and foresight.
Quote “Boeing executives now admit that the company's aggressive outsourcing put it in partnership with suppliers that weren't up to the job. They say Boeing didn't recognize that sending so much work abroad would demand more intensive management from the home plant, not less.”
Cultural differences ethics and business practices play a major role, you have to understand the way a culture think. Boeing assumed working practices mirror their own...Oh dear; what a very expensive assumption.
If we as a company managed our business with such careless forethought we would not be here today.
Got to go...get back to doing the very best job I can for our clients and Synchro.

Implementation & Training Costs
From the beginning of the New Year 2010
All Implementation costs have been reduced by 50%
For the 12 months from date of installation all training associated with implementation is now reduced by a total of 50%
MD Chris Collins
“ As a result of a great deal of feedback, we have decided to offer to all new customers this reduction as a show of total commitment to the Cast Metal Manufacturer. We know how tough it has been... many of those companies who now really need good solid systems are leaner in man power and so the need is even greater”

Good News for the Manufacturing
MANUFACTURERS are switching production back to the UK from overseas, amid concerns over quality and the high cost of freight, a survey has revealed.
The international legal firm Eversheds claimed the survey provided further evidence that the UK's "flexible" employment market meant "it suffers more in a recession but gains more in an upturn"...
